Is the Electromagnetic Radiation from a Laptop Computer Dangerous?

I don't know how many people use laptop computers on their lap, but their name implies that this is common practice. If you've ever used a laptop on your lap for even a short period of time, you may know that it can get pretty hot. Have you ever felt the tingling sensation or the feeling of a 'deeper' heat in your lap area? I have wondered about the potential safety risks involved with this, so I did some research and was surprised with my findings.

Background

As it turns out, every electronic device in the world emits a form of electromagnetic field (EMF). This EMF is actually a type of radiation. It isn't the same type as uranium or plutonium; rather, it is a non-ionizing radiation. This means that the energy emitted is not strong enough to remove electrons, or ionize the atoms. Instead, it just excites the electrons. It already sounds a little Different devices emit different types and amounts of this EMF radiation. For example, microwave ovens emit a high-frequency field that is detectable even a few yards from the microwave. The radiation field generated by most other electronic devices seems to fade out after only a couple of inches. So unless you use a device very close to your body, this doesn't seem to be much of an issue.

Laptops

Laptop or notebook computers are one of those devices that are used directly on the body. Many college students, travelers, gamers, and other people use a laptop on their lap (essentially at zero distance from the body). The research I've done seems to be inconclusive as to whether or not this is dangerous. There is a common recommendation though: limit exposure to fields over 2.5 mG. A laptop computer can emit an incredible 150 mG, which is 60 times the recommended amount!

Effects and Solution

Some health professionals believe that this EMF exposure can lead to cancer. Since a laptop is used near the groin area, infertility or birth defects are also believed to be possible. These risks are the results of a few EMF effects. First off, the EMF warms body tissue. Normal cellular functions occur at tightly-controlled temperatures. The EMF radiation from a laptop computer can change these temperatures. The radiation emitted also causes premature cell division. The cells actually divide before the DNA is correctly established, which may possibly lead to mutation.

I've found an interesting product that may alleviate these concerns. It's called a HARApad and is found at http://www.harapad.com. It looks like it's a pad that you set your laptop computer on while it's on your lap. They have a video of it in action; it definitely seems to reduce the EMF field detected by the meter. I'm not sure it will save your life, but it may; and it definitely can't hurt.

In conclusion, I don't mean to tell you that your laptop computer will kill you. This EMF radiation was just a concern of mine and I thought I'd share my findings. I'll tell you that I've found many other people- friends, family, and on the net- who share these concerns. Many health professionals seem to think there may be something to worry about. I'm starting to agree.

I have always wondered just how toxic computers can be. In a lot of call centers pregnant women are given the option of wearing a lead vest while working, assumedly to prevent health problems with the baby due to electronic radiation. It will be interesting to see what science uncovers in the future.

It's too bad that we all wait until people start getting sick to understand the dangers our modern world exposes to our unprotected bodies. I think the name should be changed to Portable computer" and a danger sticker applied to the bottom of the monitor!

Electromagnetic radiation is there all around us, but they are very feeble. All electronic devices emit them, and they are not all that feeble. While it will not kill you, it is better to keep it at a distance to avoid the effects of cumulation. -- Shastri

This whole issue reminds me a lot of cigarettes in the 50s - there wasn't enough research, and enough vested interests, so everyone said it was safe.

When I was pregnant I became very worried about it and found another product specifically for pregnant women: www.bellyarmor.com

SINCE I GOT MY LAPTOP, I GOT A SMALL TUMOR ON MY LEG.

IT WAS THERE FOR MONTHS, BEFORE IT OCCURRED TO ME,

THAT THE LAPTOP COULD HAVE CAUSED IT. I STARTED USING THE LAPTOP ON A TABLE AND THE TUMOR SHRUNK

TO JUST A SPOT. MY PARAKEET LIKED TO CHASE THE ARROW/CURSOR... I WISH I WOULD HAVE ENDED THAT RIGHT AWAY. I DIDN'T. MY KEET, WHO HAD A LARGE VOCABULARY AND HAD THE RUN OF THE HOUSE, NOW CAN

ONLY MAKE A STRANGE LITTLE SOUND AND HUDDLES IN HIS

CAGE. HE'S LIKE A DIFFERENT BIRD. I CAN'T PROVE, THAT

THE COMPUTER CAUSED THE PROBLEM... BUT BECAUSE OF

WHAT HAPPENED TO MY LEG, I'M VERY SUSPICIOUS AND

WORRIED. I'M TRYING TO LIMIT MY TIME AND EXPOSURE

AND HOPING, THAT MY ADORABLE LITTLE KEET WILL HEAL.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS OR SUGGESTIONS ON THIS

TOPIC?

I have developed this product to create a comfortable, and safer way to work on your laptop... it is a unique lap table designed specifically to hold a laptop. It has a solid, flat wooden top, a buckwheat hull filled fabric sack, and rubber bumpers you can custom fit to your machine. I believe it to be better than anything I have found on the market. It is available here...

There are many gadget users like Grace, who are now realizing that EMF could be harmful for humans. Thanks to information technology that we are now aware of these harmful effects of electronics products. At least we can go for careful and limited use of these kind of products.

i was using my laptop while charging my phone which was beside it and unknowingly my phone went off, so when i pick up my phone to make a call, i discovered that my phone was off and was very hot. i tried to put it on but it didn't and thereafter i discovered that the radiation from my laptop might have damaged my phone. i was very annoyed and felt like breaking the laptop. is there any solution to my phone?. somebody help plssss

If you never took any science or math classes, then you would never have heard the discussion about electromagnetic fields. Out of site out of mind.

P.S. Great point Vladimir, you are a real spammer - Discrediting this blog, but that was your intention.

Any forms of radiation are dangerous to our health especially if the radiation to our body is too much powerful. That is why it is very important to avoid working in front of the computer for long hours. Thanks for sharing this excellent article, keep it up!. Voted and shared.

I strongly suspect laptops can lead to cancer of various organs in the trunk.  If I don't have a barrier under my laptop, I feel heated and sick real quickly.  I've had vivid twitches in the area of my right ovary right after using a laptop.  If I put a think pillow under it it helps but I still feel some ill effects.  The only relatively safe method seems to be using it on a table or desktop.  My 32 year old cousin was recently diagnosed w/ a rare, fast moving stomach cancer.  Doctors removed an ovary a year ago due to precancerous cells in it.  Cancer doesn't run in our family at all.  A big part of me wonders how much of this could have been due to EMF exposure, specifically laptops or even a cellphone being stored in a pocket.  My gut tells me laptops are the worst, then other wireless devices, including wifi.  I also wonder if some people are more prone to cell changes from wireless devices and if so, why exactly?

p.s. I don't think it helps that I live right next to a string of power towers, we have a powerful wifi router in our bedroom study wing, and now we have the mandated smart meter.  My husband has zero concerns over EMF's, hence he won't hook up a wire to our wifi router or turn it off at night.  I think someday people will begin to wake up to the real dangers.  I do think keeping a distance from EMF devices, esp. wireless ones is very helpful.

I must add a caveat that I can't say for sure laptops can lead or even contribute to cancer.  I just suspect that they can.  I could be wrong, but I think it's better safe than sorry, for me anyway.

i spend many hours each day on my laptop.  i developed issues with pain and reduced flexibility in my right shoulder and upper arm.  i assumed it must be my posture while using the computer and so i made many changes.  eventually i became more aware of the source of the problem.  it comes from my right hand resting over the touchpad on my mac pro laptop.  i began noticing it whenever i clicked on the touchpad, realizing that the sensation became more acute as i clicked, but was still there while my hand was just resting over the touchpad.  i am sure that something (no doubt emf) is creating a stress and tightness in my shoulder, enough that it takes massage and yoga to regain the flexibilty, but it makes me think of my heart, which is also a muscle.  i smell a rat here.  surely the industry experts are aware.

I really should of research this when I purchased my notebook pc but didn't check soon enough.  I've had spasm in back of my legs and now a new mole like bump formed on my right thigh near inner area closest to groin after first 6 months of using pc on and between thighs.  The mole is been diagnoise as precancerious.  Now I'm trying to rid the bump by having it freezed off and later cut off if freezing doesn't work.  I've done stretches for the spasms and have taken flaxseed oil and stocked up on protein bars.  It's been helpful and now I haven't had any spasms.  Be causious people.  Use a bed table or any table, pc laprest or hard pad to degenerate heat from pc to your body.  In next few years, I guarantee we'll see more people having issues using a pc that generates heat on your lap or wherever you rest it on you.

Sometimes I have to have my laptop computer on my lap demo more than a few hours at a time. I don't have a fan to cool the computer, but it's not the heat that bothers me.After awhile Istart to feel physically sick. Recently I started thinking the computer must be messing with my body. I wouldn't be surprised if the radiation was toxic
